The Countdown to Stone Sheep Season
Anticipation is building with the countdown to sheep season at Kawdy Outfitters. Our first hunters will arrive at the end of July. Stone sheep hunting is an obsession for our guides, and we believe they are the most beautiful sheep in the world.
We manage our hunts carefully, taking sheep that are a minimum of 8.5 years old. This means a quality age class of mature rams, allowing those healthy 6-7 year-olds to reach full maturity.
So get yourself ready, because it’s almost time to hit the high country for sheep season in northern British Columbia.
Checklists and Last Minute Prep
When you arrive in British Columbia and step off the charter flight at your remote camp, access to the outside world is cut off. Create a checklist to make sure you have everything you need. Our base camps are exceptionally comfortable and we use horses climb some of the most difficult mountains. But on any sheep hunt, there’s a chance we will spike out, and encounter a variety of weather.
Make a gear checklist and run through everything while you pack the bags. Double check that every item is present, especially when it comes to critical clothing, boots and items specific to your firearm. An organized packing system takes a load of pressure off when you step on the airplane knowing everything is ready for the hunt.
You can download gear lists and scroll through blog posts with gear tips on our Gear Page.
Canadian Nonresident Firearms Declaration
Hunters arriving from outside Canada must complete the appropriate declaration form for their firearm. Leave behind your sidearms when traveling to Canada. Your hunting rifle is fairly easy to pass at the border when you come prepared with your nonresident declaration form.
Fill out the declaration form in advance but do not sign the form. You will sign it when the customs agent inspects your firearm and witnesses the signature. Having a copy of your hunting license and outfitter’s contact information is also useful. Carry this information when crossing into Canada and when leaving. It clearly shows your purpose for carrying firearms and can make the process more streamlined.
You can find links to the delclaration form and other border requriements on our Information Page.
The Sheep Season Countdown
Over the next several weeks, our guides and staff will be working hard to prep camps, make repairs and get things ready for the season to kick off. Our first hunters of the season will be flying into camps at the end of July. We can’t wait to get the 2019 hunting season underway!
